Probate Court Unclaimed Funds
Sometimes in the administration of an estate, 1 or more individuals may not be able to be located. The inability to locate them may be cause for delay, but not the finalization of the administration of the estate. In those cases where persons entitled to inherit or to fees cannot be located, the Court has authority to order their share paid over to the Treasurer of the County in which the estate was administered, and the Treasurer is required to hold their fees for them.
Where a beneficiary or other is located, or discovers that there are funds being held for his or her benefit, he may apply to the Treasurer for the release of such funds, however, that application must be brought, in the 1st instance, to the Probate Court in which the estate was administered. If the Probate Court is satisfied the individual who brought the application is, in fact, the intended beneficiary, it will issue an order to the Treasurer to release those funds to the claimant.
The situation may be the same where the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Unclaimed Funds is also holding funds for a someone. Such individuals may have to obtain the approval of the Probate Court for the release of those funds to them.

The following is a notice posted annually (PDF) by the Mahoning County Probate Court pursuant to O.R.C. §2335.34 for those persons having unclaimed funds through the Mahoning County Probate Court for the previous year. If your name appears on this list, you may email or call us to obtain the information required to obtain these funds.
